Public Comment Sought on Updated School Library Media Standards

The Utah State Board of Education is seeking public comment on a proposed update to the grades 6-12 Core Standards for Library Media in public schools.

The Utah Core Standards for Library Media have been under review and revision throughout the 2013-14 school year. On May 9, the Utah State Board of Education approved the revised standards for public comment. This public comment period will last for 90 days, from May 19 to August 17. After the comments have been reviewed and summarized, and appropriate changes made, a final presentation on the standards will be made to the board.

Review, insight, and comments from not only all librarians, but all interested members of the public, are a critical part of this public comment session.

The standards are aimed at preparing students to be literate members of society who are able to find, evaluate, and use information appropriately throughout their academic, professional, and personal lives. They are organized in three strands:

  • Research and information literacy.
  • Reading engagement.
  • Media literacy.

The draft of the proposed Core Standards for Library Media is available here. Here is a link for providing comment to the Board on the proposed standards.
