State Board requests public comment on proposed fine arts core standards

The Utah State Board of Education voted Friday, Oct., 9, 2015, to release draft Utah Core Arts Standards for a 90-day public review ending on January 15, 2016. Draft standards for grades K-12 have been written for the specific arts disciplines of Dance, Drama/Theatre, Music and Visual Arts. Draft standards for grades 6-12 have been written for Media Arts. The standards have each been written with four artistic strands:

  • Create
  • Perform/Present/Produce
  • Respond
  • Connect

The 2015 revisions can be reviewed here: Fine Arts, Elementary Fine Arts, and Secondary Fine Arts.

Elementary draft standards are organized by grade level. Secondary draft standards are organized by art-form, level, and, in the case of music, by specialty.

The writing teams consisted of public and private arts educators, district arts coordinators and representatives from higher education. The writing teams used a number of resources in their work. The work of the writing teams was submitted to USBE who then requested revisions in some content and format. The draft standards reflect those revisions.
